Open up the "Speech Folder PR". You will see a folder called "WordPerfect 3.5 Preferences". Double click on this folder to open it up. You will see a file called "WordPerfect". Click once on "WordPerfect" to select it. Now with "WordPerfect" selected, press down on the Option key and drag "WordPerfect" to the Preferences folder in the System folder.
Note: Pressing the option key keeps your original file in its original folder. You are just sending a copy to the new destination. Note: make sure "WordPerfect" does not have the word "copy" added, or the file will not get recognized. If you just make a duplicate of a file (instead of using the option key), you get the word "copy" added which you must delete.
If WordPerfect crashes and you loose your preferences you are now all set. You have a backup. Open up the Preference folder of the System Folder. Throw out any WordPerfect file you find there. (Note: WordPerfect can not run with more than one preference file at a time.) Then open the "WordPerfect 3.5 Preferences" folder in "Speech Folder PR" and click once on "WordPerfect". Now with "WordPerfect" selected, press down on the Option key and drag "WordPerfect" to the Preferences folder in the System folder.
If for some reason you should accidentally destroy your backup copy of WordPerfect preferences for Proportional Reading on your hard drive, you can always reload this file back into the WordPerfect Preferences folder in the "Speech Folder pr" from the Proportional Reading CD ROM.
When WordPerfect loads, WordPerfect automatically creates a new preference file if the old one is damaged or not present. If no WordPerfect preference file was found and WordPerfect created a new preference file, this new preference file will not have your settings or programs on it. Also, some administrators on networks may want you to leave WordPerfect unaltered when you are finished. You are all set in either case. If you have this type of administrator, just throw out the WordPerfect preference file when you are done and reinstall it from your backup file the next time you come into the computer lab, or whenever a crash destroys the old preference file. This way everybody is very happy.
To make these aliases, go to the Finder and open the "System Folder" and then the "Apple Menu Items" folder. Now go to your hard disk and open up the folder called "Speech Folder pr" Select all the files from a2-a9. Now pull down the File menu to "Make Alias". An alias is created for each file. Select all the aliases and move the aliases into the "Apple Menu Items" in the system folder.
Now go to the Hard Drive and repeat this procedure to make aliases of the following four applications: WordPerfect 3.5, "Miriam Webster Dictionary" or "American Heritage Dictionary" (whichever dictionary application you have on your hard drive) , "Omnipage Professional" and "DeskScan 11 2.1". To do this, go to the Finder and select in turn the actual application you wish. Check to make sure that you have selected the application you want, and not just a folder with the same name. Pull down the File menu to "Make Alias". An alias will be created. Move the alias into the Apple menu.
Retitle the name of the WordPerfect alias to "a1 Open WordPerfect alias". Doing this will make WordPerfect come to the top of the Apple menu. Also retitle the dictionary "alias" to "a7 Dictionary alias". Otherwise the dictionary won't be called up correctly from other programs. Note, this proceedure enables you to use whatever electronic dictionary you wish.
Now, with the Apple Menu Items window active, pull down the File menu to New Folder. A new folder will be created in the Apple Menu Items window. Retitle this folder "a2 PR". Drag all PR aliases a2-a9 into this folder except "a3 Prepare Sel by Sen alias", "a3 Prepare Selection alias", and "a7 Dictionary alias".
Close the "Apple Menu Items" window and then close the "System Folder" window. You should see the specific aliases of applications listed directly in the Apple menu or in the "a2 PR" folder in the Apple window . These programs can now be opened from the Apple menu or by another program. Do not skip this step of making aliases.
Note: Do not put the two specified "a3 ... alias" files in the "a2 PR" folder inside the Apple Menu or the computer won't be able to automatically find these aliases when it is searching for them.
You need PlainTalk installed to be able to have text read out loud with synthesized voice. In order to change speaking speeds you need to have version 1.4.1 of PlainTalk installed.
If you need to install Plaintalk 1.4.1 or upgrade to PlainTalk 1.4.1 and can't find it, you can download it for free from Apple's Web site. We have also included this application on our disk. Just double click on the folder "Apple PlainTalk 1.4.1". Then click on the folder "English Text To Speech". Then click on the installer and follow directions. MacintalkPro is an update of earlier Plaintalk Versions, which will also work. Choose the voice "Fred" from the "Speech" control panel.
You will also need to make sure the "say" scripting addition is in the system folder. To do this, open the System Folder then go to the Extensions folder and then go to the Scripting Additions folder. You should see the Scripting Addition called "say" here. If it is not present, move the "say" file from the folder "Speech Folder PR" to the Scripting Additions Folder. Close down all the System windows when done.
Select Control Panels and then select "General Controls". Deselect the box "Show Desktop when in the background".
It is highly recommended that you choose to make the "Window Color" of the window frames gray. This will cut down contrast problems while reading. To do this select "Control Panels" from the Apple menu and select the "Color" control panel. Click on the box called "Window Color" and scroll through the color choices until you get to gray. Select this shade. You can change these settings any time you wish.
You should also pick a background pattern for your Finder. This pattern should not be bright and it should not be distracting. Choose flat gray or a pattern with lots of blue and black. Doing this will greatly cut down on the overall brightness and glare caused by your screen. To do this, select "Control Panels" from the Apple menu and select the "Desktop Pattern" control panel. Scroll through the choices and then set the pattern you select. You can change this pattern any time you wish.
