Dyslexia

Students and others with dyslexia often make reversals between the word they are looking at and the word above, below or at either side. Proportional reading can immediately eliminate this type of dyslexia. It does so by presenting text on the screen just one word at a time, center justified at speeds up to 1000 words per minute. Students never have to move their eyes. Since only one word is on the screen at a time, it is impossible to confuse this word with other words.

A few dyslexic individuals also twist up the letters in individual words. For these students and adults, we provide voice and text together at very high speed, up to 400 words per minute. The voice follows right behind the visual input, immediately correcting any errors. Students with severe dyslexia are immediately able to read at grade level, and often much faster and better than their classmates. This tool is called Level Six reading.

Students with dyslexia have often developed a number of obsessive/compulsive behaviors in a courageous and creative effort to cope. These must be pointed out so the student can let go of them in favor of new techniques which have just been learned and can be seen to be much more effective. See our article on PRT.

Many dyslexics, and many students who are not true dyslexics, make a dyslexic error of reversal under one particular situation. This is not true dyslexia, but rather situational dyslexia, and it can be corrected immediately. The problem occurs at the instant when the student starts to loose meaning. The mind will wildly search for a clue, instead of backing up and carefully sounding out the exact text that is in front of the student. The result of this can be twisted up words. Backing up and reading what is actually there can correct this problem immediately. This solution almost always must be pointed out to the student.

Very often a number of the eighteen bad reading habits are also present in dyslexics. Cognitive projection and different types of guessing, in particular, are almost always present. These bad habits can be corrected immediately with the PR program.

Repeated Voice and Text Correlation

Many dyslexic students need repeated voice and text correlation. The goal here is to make up for the loss of one-on-one reading by parents and teachers to children. Furthermore, the effort here is to improve upon this model. Often when teachers or parents read to children, the child has no idea which word the adult is reading.

PR addresses this situation by highlighting the text that is being read out loud so there is no question as to what words the sound is associated with. Students start by reading a word at a time and then a phrase and then a sentence at a time. Words are automatically repeated in order of their importance in terms of frequency of use. The words used most often are repeated the most.

Numerous studies have shown that regular students need to see and hear a word fourteen times in order to gain possession of it, whereas learning disabled students need to see and hear the word forty-three times in order to master it. The PR voice and text approach provides this repeated correlation, and accurately, the necessary number of times for all students. The program also does this within the context of understanding great literature, not by "drill and kill". No lesson plans are needed. The lesson plan is simply one great work of literature after another. Current class reading can also be scanned and read with this program. Any text on the internet can also be immediately formatted and read with PR.

For Further Information

Please read our introduction to PR. This article is called "Improve Reading Quickly". Click on the link here, or access this article from the center of our home page. This article describes our progression of seven separate steps for creating good reading habits. This article describes how the program is used and each of the specific purposes. It explains briefly how our software provides help for almost every possible reading difficulty, and describes how two of the seven approaches provide different methods for anyone to immediately read text with increased speed and comprehension.

This Introductory article also explains how ideally this seven step, interactive program is combined with initial evaluation and periodic consultation. Our 16 page paper describes in depth why this should occur and spells out in detail the specific approach used by the PR trainer in the classroom, or with individual students or adults. A detailed description of the eight step initial evaluation process is also available. We offer a Free Demo DVD with free shipping anywhere in the USA.

The introductory article on PR also explains how immediate reading improvement can occur by using specialized hardware which holds book pages open. By freeing up the hands, this tool allows the reader to sit back in a relaxed and supported position and to type notes while reading. It also enables one to stop turning ones head from side to side while typing. For many people, this tool immediately improves reading comprehension and enjoyment as well as productivity.
