Help for Anxiety and Control Issues
For Reading Anxiety, PTSD, Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders and Panic and Anxiety Attacks
Proportional Reading (PR) can provide immediate help for numerous anxiety and control issues. We will discuss each of the above issues in turn.
Reading Anxiety
Many students are afraid of failure in any effort they might make to read. This
anxiety prevents their willingness to begin reading. PR can provide numerous
solutions for this condition.
Where the child is terrified of decoding, the program enables the child to just echo each phrase, after it is presented and pronounced. This still enables the child to get the necessary voice and text correlation to develop decoding, automaticity and fluency.
Secondly, students are often overwhelmed by a full page of text. The cause can be any of numerous possibilities, like dyslexia or the simple fear of not being able to read what is presented, or brain trauma or stoke. PR allows the text to be presented in ways that will eliminate these issues. Text can be presented just one sentence at a time on the screen. The rest of the page is not present. Text can be presented a phrase at a time or even just a word at a time on the screen. One of these choices will eliminate the fear of being overwhelmed by the text. Breaking the task into small increments is the key to progress here. It is up to the student what increment of text he or she wants presented at a time. Changes can be made at any time.
Another kind of reading anxiety is the ADD/ADHD fear of being bored and having to put up with what is often perceived as a stupid presentation. PR can address the ADD/ADHD child and his reluctance to read by presenting the thought of the sentence and the actual words of the sentence very quickly, so that there is voice and text correlation, but the material is coming into the mind very quickly. This type of presentation, done with level six reading, will eliminate the boredom from regular speech presentation speed and from interactive pausing, both of which are too slow for the ADD/ADHD child.
Post Trauma Stress Disorder
The student or adult with PTSD wants to be very much in control at all times
in order to avoid having to think about trauma from the past. This kind of control
limits and precludes the child from relaxing and being open to the meaning of
what is being said. It also usually precludes any kind of creative response
to what has been read.
With the silent reading tool of level five, PR will enable the student to experience relaxation and meditation and openness as one reads. PR will open up a lifestyle choice for the student, by giving the student experience in an alternative to constant control and vigilance.
Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders
The student or adult exhibiting borderline or narcissistic personality disorder
will often exhibit the following distortions of reality: denial, rationalization,
transfer, projection, and petrification. As destructive as these behaviors are
to other members of society and to the individual himself, from another point
of view they are all simply control means to avoid dealing with the fear of
being nothing. In other words, these personality disorders are rooted in fear
of exploring with the "real self" and perhaps grieving for one's losses.
Level five reading in PR provides a means for an individual to quickly learn how to relax and surrender to communication with the real self. The relaxation, meditation and prayer states are quickly learned with their open mindedness and receptivity. The student learns to hear his inner voice and to listen to a dialogue between his inner voice and his real self. The student learns to experience the love and friendship and insight of communication with the real self.
Panic and Anxiety Attacks
The intensity of panic and anxiety attacks is so high that it would be absurd
to suggest that one try to talk a sufferer part way through an attack into reading.
At this point it is too late to try to introduce a new concept.
What works is a different approach. If before the panic and anxiety attack begins, the student or adult learns the ability to relax and to surrender into peace, he or she will be armed with this tool when the next panic and anxiety attack knocks at the front door. At this point the individual will know that he or she has a choice, for all panic and anxiety attacks feed on themselves by the willing participation of the individual in an escalating thought pattern. Once the individual knows in advance that he or she has a choice to inter a different state instead, then that individual is armed for avoidance when there is a knock at the front door. Reading with level five will teach this alternative choice.
Using Great Literature to Regain Health
Reading great literature with PR can quickly become for almost everyone the
wonderful life enrichment that so many have experienced in the past. PR provides
answers for many anxiety and control issues when combined with reading great
literature.
For Further Information
Please read our introduction to PR. This article is called "Improve Reading Quickly". Click on the link here, or access this article from the center of our home page. This article describes our progression of seven separate steps for creating good reading habits. This article describes how the program is used and each of the specific purposes. It explains briefly how our software provides help for almost every possible reading difficulty, and describes how two of the seven approaches provide different methods for anyone to immediately read text with increased speed and comprehension.
This Introductory article also explains how ideally this seven step, interactive program is combined with initial evaluation and periodic consultation. Our 16 page paper describes in depth why this should occur and spells out in detail the specific approach used by the PR trainer in the classroom, or with individual students or adults. A detailed description of the eight step initial evaluation process is also available. We offer a Free Demo DVD with free shipping anywhere in the USA.
The introductory article on PR also explains how immediate reading improvement can occur by using specialized hardware which holds book pages open. By freeing up the hands, this tool allows the reader to sit back in a relaxed and supported position and to type notes while reading. It also enables one to stop turning ones head from side to side while typing. For many people, this tool immediately improves reading comprehension and enjoyment as well as productivity.
